About Gimmick! EXACT☆MIX

Gimmick! EXACT☆MIX is an arcade remake of Sunsoft's Gimmick! made by exA-Arcadia team. It was released on December 31st, 2020 only for exA-Arcadia systems.

The remake offers new detailed pixel art, an arranged soundtrack, quality-of-life changes and extra features.

You can visit the official game page here.

This work-in-progress website aims to collect and provide info on everything that's known about the arcade release. If you own an exA-Arcadia system and this game, and are willing to provide media from it, contact Rednorka on Discord.

Features

Gimmick! EXACT☆MIX has new, fullscreen cutscenes and updated designs for characters and more.

The arcade release also has a quick tutorial level, explaining how the game works, as well as the expanded controls that include item switch and use buttons.

A play session can be customized via options menu: you can switch between classic and new graphics, music and controls, as well as enable scanlines or mirror the gameplay.

The game has 2 modes to choose:

In Original mode, you get to play all the stages from Gimmick! from start to finish. Every stage is now on a 2-minute time limit (refilled every checkpoint and treasure), encouraging speed during gameplay.

In Time Attack mode, you can pick any stage to play for beating it in the shortest time possible. It's great for exploring any stage without playing through the whole game.

Both modes store your record, best score and time respectively, upon completion.

History

The game was first revealed at Japan Amusement Expo 2019 on January 26th. The demo was an early version, with assets made by the lead developer, Mike Moffitt, and only contained the first stage. The art for the demo was hastely drawn before deadlines, and the music arrangements used FM synth.

Gimmick! EXACT☆MIX was location tested during 2020 - at Takadanobaba Mikado Game Center (December 27, 2019 - January 3, 2020 + August 16th - 20th 2020) and World Game Circus (August 30th - September 3rd 2020), all in Japan. The early trailer shows a different-looking UI, among other subtle differences from the final remake.

After its release, EXACT☆MIX received some patches, had more promo videos and... that's it, really. The lead developer himself decided to make the game exclusive to the arcades, with no plans for a PC or console port.

Facts

Strange Memories of Death, an unused track in the original game, is now used in the continue screen, as well as Time Attack name entry screen.

The loop in options menu is the only new track in the remake.

The game supports both 16:9 and 4:3 resolutions, as well as vertical position.

The 16:9 resolution is achieved by moving the HUD to the gameplay view, cropping the top and bottom of the screen and then stretching the image. Due to the crop, some stage sections move the camera vertically.

The arcade remake uses an emulator to process game logic and physics, making them identical to Gimmick! on Famicom/NES, while using its own renderer and sound engine, and able to do other tweaks (checkpoint popups, stage edit, etc).

On initial release, the rescued girl's animations were more... provocative. This was later deleted (1.0.4), then readded but only for Japanese setting (1.0.6). (Obviously, this fact won't be demonstrated here)
